Running Solaris 10 in Parallels on Macbook

I have been trying for the past few days to run Solaris 10/11 in parallels on a new macbook. The main issue I had was the JDS/gnome resolution adaptation with the 1280x800 resolution of the macbook.

Here are my steps :

  • I installed the new parallels beta (build 3036)
  • downloaded the free Solaris 10 update 3 from Sun's web site. Download the DVD since it can be directly mounted in parallels.
  • create a new VM with the Solaris 10 type, but, before to finish, un-select the option to start the Solaris installation and edit the VM configuration to add a custom screen resolution of 1280x800.
  • start the VM to launch the install
  • log in an create a /etc/X11/xorg.conf with something like the one attached here (xorg.conf). Basically you need to add the Modeline lines (generated with /usr/X11/bin/gtf) and put 1280x800 in the appropriate Display subsections.

It should work. However, I'm still experiencing some duplicate keystrokes and garbled screen after VM resume (I have solved the later issue by switching multiple times between full screen and os window).

If anyone has any solution for these two problems, let me know.

Re: Running Solaris 10 in Parallels on Macbook

I can't figure out how to resize the screen on my macbook to fit 1200 by 800 using solaris,i've been trying all day, the fact that i'm kinda new on this OS and any basic help would be appreciated.

Re: Running Solaris 10 in Parallels on Macbook

Add me to the list, kind of.

I've installed Solaris 10/u2_x86 on a Core2Duo iMac under Parallels Desktop build 3188.

The only screen resolution I get is 1600x1200, which gets me scrollbars. (Beats the default 640x480 default/only on a recent Linux distro I tried.)

I've configured the Parallels VM for 1680x1050 and 1440x900, but neither are selectable in Solaris after restarting it.

I assume that some config file in Solaris has to be edited...but there's no /etc/X11/... that I'd expect from Linux.

Any advice would be nice.

Did you try with the file example I provided in the blog ? it solved the problem for me.

Re: Running Solaris 10 in Parallels on Macbook

Your example xorg.conf file worked perfectly... Saved me a lot of work !! Thank You .. Now if I can figure out how to make Solaris use the Airport !!
